Kulter Report #39
9th July, 2012
The guy who is going nowhere, usually ends up there….
Dear all, it has been a while since I’ve written something about this great place Kulter.
Last week I visited the exhibition of Tassilo Letzel, a German artist, photographer and avid cyclist. Letzel likes the wasteland. It is his goal to plot it for us... By taking pictures of the lost spaces and places, Letzel somehow brings a value back that has long been gone, in the eyes of the laic.
Coloured garagedoors, snakeskin on a dusty road, cables and improvised staircases are all part of Letzels new plot of rural architecture in an urban environment. Letzel takes the wasteland inside by taking some of his favorite finds in the Kulter-gallery.
The exhibition seems a little flat at first. Some run down plants, some thrash nailed to the wall and picturess arranged on an imrovised table. Not very impressive it seems. But as I spent more time in the place it occured to me, this exhibition is not about the exhibition, it is about the trip that led to the exhibition. This exhibition is an invitation to make the trip yourself.
Tassilo Letzel invites his audience often to ride their bikes with him. His tours are funny and for those who have visited his exhibition: a feast of recognition.
